Stroke Statistics

The following research was conducted in an effort to address a global need within the medical field. There is currently no cost effective and efficient method of screening for Carotid Artery Disease (CAD), the leading indicator of Ischemic Stroke. Based on the statistical information presented, the Infrasonic Device is poised to fill this need and have a global impact, which will save millions of lives and billions of dollars when deployed properly.

The US Problem

  • Fourth leading cause of death: Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (Ovbiagele, et al, 2013)
  • Average number of strokes per minute: 1.5 (Go, et al., 2012)
  • Cost associated with CVD & Stroke yearly: $386,000,000,000 (Heidenreich, et al., 2012)
  • Individuals hospitalized yearly due to CVD & Stroke: 4,000,000 (Mensah & Brown, 2007)
  • Avg hospital stay of CVD & Stroke victim: 5 days (Mensah & Brown, 2007)
  • Avg cost for hospital stays (w/in 90 days of stroke): $15,000 (University Hospital, Newark, New Jersey. The Stroke Center at University Hospital. Stroke statistics. www.uhnj.org/stroke/stats.htm, Date Accessed: Nov. 13, 2014)
  • Direct spending on non-nursing home stroke care constitutes >10.7% of Medicare budget
    Medicare spending $572B – 2013; $591B – 2014; $606B – 2015 (HHS budget data; www.hhs.gov)
  • Number of Stroke victims yearly in US: 795,000 (Heidenreich, et al., 2012)
» 87% are ischemic (Mozaffarian, et al, 2015)
» Percentage of Stroke victims under 65 years of age: 25% (Go, et al., 2012)
  • Mean lifetime cost of ischemic stroke in the United States: $165,537.39* (Taylor, et al., 1996), $199,904.65* (Rachel Wittenauer & Lily Smith, 2012) * Figure converted to 2015 dollars amount using inflation calculator www.usinflationcalculator.com)

The Global Problem

  • Number of first Stokes estimated globally each year: 16,900,000 (Lancet, Vol 383, Jan 18, 2014)
  • 10% worldwide deaths (52,769,700) due to stroke (Lancet, Vol 383, Jan 18 2014)
  • 80% of all stroke victims live in low and mid-income countries (Truelsen, T., et al, 2007)
  • Stroke is leading cause of death for people > 60 years. (Mackay, J. et al, 2004). Third cause of death worldwide for all ages.
  • Stroke is leading cause of disability (Feigin, V.L., et al, 2010)
  • Estimated Stoke outcomes globally: 50% some degree of physical or cognitive impairment (Leys, D., et al 2005)
  • The average cost of care for a patient up to 90 days after stroke is $15,000. For 10 percent of patients, the cost of care for the first 90 days after a stroke is $35,000.
